The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond touched its highest level since June 2007 on Tuesday, hitting a fresh 19-year high at 5.33% earlier in the day amid inflation and spending concerns.
Jonathan Krinsky, a top technical strategist at BTIG, said that based on the technical trajectory, the selloff could worsen in short order. Since early August, the 30-year Treasury yield has broken out of its three-year trading range, with technical signals indicating the selloff is not yet over.
The only time in history in which the 30-year yield went from trading in the 4% range to the 6% range within six months was June 1999, and less than four months later, the S&P 500 was in correction territory, with the index later falling into a years-long bear market as the dot-com bubble fizzled.
